CHORD PROGRESSIONS

AI Chord Progression Generator: Create Editable MIDI Chords

A chord progression does not need to be complicated to create a strong musical direction. What matters is that the harmony supports the mood, gives the bass somewhere to move and leaves space for a melody. When inspiration is low, use a repeatable process instead of searching for a magical sequence of chords.

1. Choose the emotional target before the chords

Start with a mood: uplifting, dark, nostalgic, tense, warm or cinematic. Then choose a key and scale that fit the track. This immediately narrows the harmonic choices.

2. Think in movement, not chord names

A useful progression usually contains a sense of home, movement and return. Loop a candidate and ask whether it feels settled, suspended or unresolved at the right moments.

IdeaToMIDI can create genre-aware chord directions from the current key, scale, mood and Style DNA so you can compare several starting points quickly.

3. Test rhythm and voicing

The same chord names can feel different depending on inversion, register and rhythm. Move notes between octaves, keep useful common tones and leave low space for the bass.

4. Check the progression with a bassline

Harmony becomes easier to judge when you hear the low-end movement. If the bass feels awkward, try a different inversion or simpler harmonic rhythm before replacing the whole progression.

5. Export MIDI and edit the notes

Once the progression has the right emotional direction, export the MIDI and finish the voicing with your own instruments. Change chord lengths, remove notes, add extensions or rewrite one chord completely.
