From Chords to a Full MIDI Arrangement: Step-by-Step Workflow
The hardest part of a new track is often not creating one good musical fragment—it is keeping every next decision connected to that fragment. A structured MIDI workflow lets you develop harmony, bass, melody and arrangement without losing the identity of the original idea.
1. Define the musical direction
Choose genre, mood, BPM, key and a more specific stylistic direction before generating layers. These decisions become the shared context for everything that follows.
2. Build the harmonic foundation
Create or choose a chord progression and make sure its rhythm and voicing leave room for the bass and main hook. Do not over-arrange the chords at this stage.
3. Add bass and hook as dependent layers
Let the bass support the harmony and groove. Then build a hook that reacts to the chord tones and rhythm. The layers should sound connected before you expand the structure.
4. Turn the core idea into sections
Decide where energy rises, falls and returns. Reuse the strongest material, but change density, register, rhythm or layer presence so each section has a purpose.
5. Export organised MIDI to your DAW
Export individual layers or the full arrangement, choose your own instruments and continue production in Ableton Live, FL Studio, Logic Pro, Reaper or another MIDI-capable DAW.
IdeaToMIDI is built to hand over editable MIDI rather than lock you into rendered audio.
